How to Increase Your Rank in Google Places

Google Places can bring a lot of traffic to local businesses as well as lend credibility to an establishment. It can help you get people from Google Maps to your establishment, as well as help you rank highly in organic results for local searches.

Here’s how to get a high ranking in Google Places.

==> PageRank and Backlinks Matter

One factor that still plays a strong role in Google Places rankings are your backlinks. In standard SEO, backlinks are the backbone of any SEO campaign. In Google Places optimization, backlinks play a lesser role, but are still critically important.

According to SEOMoz’s Google Places reverse engineering study, PageRank has a very measurable impact on how well you rank.

In addition to getting links back to your site, you should also focus on getting links from local sites. For example, if you own a pizza shop in Chicago, try to get as many links as possible from other Chicago businesses and websites.

==> Work on Your Citations

Your citations are other web sources that cite your business.

These include websites like the Yellow Pages, Superpages, Yahoo!, Yelp, Citysearch and more.

These websites will list your address, phone number and possibly your web address as well.

Google uses these citations to verify that you are who you say you are. They want to make sure your business actually exists before putting it live on Google Places.

The number and quality of your citations affects your rankings. If any of your citations are inaccurate, make sure you contact the website to change them. If you’re not listed on any major offline business directory, make sure you submit your business.

==> Get Reviews

Reviews play another big role in ranking. The more reviews you have and the better the reviews, the higher your rankings.

Try to get as many people to review your business as possible. You can ask personal friends, family members and employees to leave honest reviews. You can also incentivize customers to do reviews.

Do whatever you can to get as many reviews as possible. However, never fake a review and never review your own business.

==> Listing Tips

There are a few important things to pay attention to in your listing.

First, categories are extremely important. They help Google figure out exactly what kind of business you run, because keywords aren’t always a good gauge when it comes to business names.

Make sure you’re in the right category. Do a search for your business type, see what category your competitors are using and do the same.

Make sure you verify your ownership of the business. Doing so will also give you a measurable bump.

Finally, make sure you fill out the information as accurately and completely as possible. Use your real phone number and not a call tracking number. Use your main website and not a website designed specifically for Google Places.

How to Make Money from Your Rss Feed

By using RSS feeds intelligently, you can turn your existing content into an additional stream of revenue. Making money through RSS feeds is more of a long-term strategy than most other online marketing strategies. When employed properly, however, their ability to hook customers is unmatched.

==> Why RSS Feeds Are Different

RSS feeds are fundamentally different than SEO or paid traffic in one crucial way. Everyone who’s viewing your content through an RSS feed is already a fan of your content.

RSS feeds are an opt-in traffic source. The only way someone ends up getting your RSS content is if someone deliberately clicks an RSS button and signs up to receive content.

This means two things: First of all, you’ve already won them over. They already see content from you as valuable. On the other hand, you also have to be careful about losing them.

These are some of your most valuable customers. The last thing you want to do is over-market to them and lose them as a result.

==> Start with a Content Focus

If your content is stellar, people who have you on RSS will keep reading your content. Remember, they added you to their RSS readers because they want to have your content in front of them regularly.

On the other hand, if the quality of your content takes a dive, you’ll easily lose them. All it takes is the click of the delete button.

Start with a focus on good content. Everything else comes second.

==> Monetizing an RSS Feed

The most obvious way to monetize an RSS feed is to sell your own products. Because they already believe in you and what you’re selling, there’s a strong chance that they’ll buy.

Another potential source of revenues is affiliate products. If you can get someone to buy someone else’s products while taking a commission, you can make quite a bit of money on that.

Make sure that whatever you sell or promote, you truly believe in. Selling products that you don’t personally believe in is a sure-fire way to lose customers.

More innovative ways to make money through RSS feeds is to put advertising in the feed itself. There are a couple ways to do this.

First is AdSense for Feeds. Google AdSense has a program that allows you to put AdSense ads directly into your RSS feeds. What’s great about this is that the ads are clearly distinguished as ads, so there’s no endorsement by you.

You can also sell links or space in your RSS feed. This can be done privately, or through a RSS ad exchange network like Feedvertiser.

Monetizing an RSS feed can add a nice stream of revenue to your bottom line. Make sure that your content quality comes first, then pick one of the many different ways to monetize the traffic.

How to Use Social Media Sites to Improve Your SEO

31DaysProBlogger

It’s no secret that search engine rankings are important to the success of your online business. Even though algorithms keep changing, one thing is for certain – social media is here to stay and it can be quite useful to you and your audience.

If you aren’t already familiar with social media, you might want to get started. In the next few years everyone in the civilized world will know something about Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube – to name a few. You can find everyone there, even those who are within your target audience.

Search engine optimization is necessary if you want to achieve any useful ranking that can impact your business in a positive way. It can take months and even as long as a year or more for websites to gain a garnered spot on the first page. To speed up that process, you can take a look at social media to increase your visibility.

Google is now considering social media stats in their overall algorithm for website rankings. The good news is that many of us use social media anyway, so turning it for business won’t be a stretch. You can use your knowledge and the keywords from your website to help you attract other social media members who are in your target market.

Using Social Media for SEO

Here are a few tips to help you utilize social media to improve your SEO efforts.

* Join the social networks that matter – There are several social media sites but the ones most used are Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Establish personal (if you haven’t already) and business profiles on each of these sites. Within your profiles, incorporate the target keywords that you use on your site to attract visitors.

* Utilize every area of these sites – Link updates on your website to posts that you make on these sites. Uploading a video to YouTube? Use keywords in the description and add a link to your site. “Like” pages that are similar to your niche market.

* Join sites relevant to your target audience
– This is an old one but a good one. For instance, when you sign up for community forums, become an active member. Two-word comments, or posting to promote your site, can be viewed as spamming. You will gain more traffic from other members and influence in the community if you genuinely participate.

* Follow other relevant blogs – Make comments, offer to guest blog for influential bloggers in your niche and offer useful information.

The more engaging you are on social media sites, the more you will rise to the top on the lists of others who also patronize those sites. This can elevate your status and increase traffic to your website. Also, communicating with your target market here can offer valuable insight towards profitable changes to your website business.

Should You Move Your Business to the Cloud?

Today more and more businesses are moving their business to the cloud. As internet technology gets more sophisticated, more safe and more user friendly, it’s making more and more sense for businesses to use cloud services rather than in-house services. Should you move your business to the cloud? Here are some important considerations.

==> What Is the Cloud?

The cloud refers to any service that resides on the internet instead of your own computer.

For example, Salesforce is a cloud-based customer management system. While a lot of sales teams still use in-house systems to manage their sales and customers, more and more people are moving to online CMS systems.

Here are some of the most important things to think about when you’re considering moving to the cloud.

==> Penetration Security

What are the chances that your data can be compromised by hackers? Though there’s no way to guarantee it can’t happen, you can reduce the chances by working with a reputable company.

Even banks and Fortune 500 companies like Sony have been penetrated in 2011. You can take precautions, but penetration security is a real concern of the cloud.

==> Data Security

On the other hand, you also need to consider the security of your data. What happens if an earthquake hits the servers of the cloud service? What happens if a drive gets corrupted?

Is your data backed up in multiple locations? Is there a possibility of the cloud service losing your information?

==> Costs

One of the biggest reasons to switch to the cloud is to reduce costs.

For example, compare the costs between running an in-house email server and using a cloud-based email service.

A cloud-based service like AWeber or GetResponse might cost you $40 a month. On the other hand, running a mail server can cost you thousands of dollars a month, including the cost of the system admin. Not to mention the set-up costs.

Cloud services are typically much, much cheaper than their in-house counterparts.

==> Ease of Use

Oftentimes cloud services are just plain easier to use than in-house services.

Take Salesforce for example. If you had an in-house team of engineers design a CMS system, chances are there are going to be all kinds of usability issues. Working out the kinks in a new system takes months.

On the other hand, cloud systems have usually already worked out all the kinks. All their features are easy to use, as they’ve already taken months of customer feedback into account.

==> Legalities

If you’re dealing with sensitive customer data, make sure you consult an attorney before putting the data on the cloud. Some information, such as social security numbers or credit card data, cannot be transferred without careful considerations.

Moving your business to the cloud can help you cut a lot of costs and save a lot of time. However, there are definite drawbacks as well. These are some of the most important factors to consider before making your final decision.

The latest jargon in the digital world, “cloud computing” leaves many small-business owners scratching their heads. At its simplest, cloud computing enables businesses to do away with servers and much of their other IT hardware by running their software online. Web-based email programs like Yahoo or Hotmail are examples of cloud-based applications; Microsoft is making its entire Office suite available free in the cloud; Google and others also have productivity suites in the cloud. Dr. Williams eschews the jargon and marketing hype generated by IT vendors and helps business owners think clearly about how cloud computing could help improve their business. He addresses fears related to data security and business continuity and also examines how cloud computing can impact a business’s carbon footprint. Case studies explain how businesses such as Dell and The New York Times have used cloud computing to their advantage.

How to Monetize Your Online Content

Content is the foundation of a successful website or web based business. Without good web content your audience cannot find you. The search engines won’t list you and you won’t be able to build a reputation or build awareness online. Content is key. However, content can also be a significant way to make additional money, including that coveted ‘passive income’.

Here are three great ways to monetize your content online:

#1 Promote Your Own Products or Services

If you sell products or services, you probably use your content to build credibility, readership and ultimately your profits. However, you can also use your content to promote your own products or services. In fact, if you’re not doing this occasionally you’re likely missing out on profits.

At a minimum, include a call to action at the bottom of articles or blog posts that link to relevant products or services. For example, if you own a cleaning service and you’ve written an article on how to clean your grout, you can include a call to action that promotes your services. Just because someone knows how to clean their own grout doesn’t mean they want to! Your call to action may be the trigger that motivates them to hire you.

You can also include the occasional link to your products or services within the body of your content.

#2 Link to Affiliate Sites

You don’t have to promote your own products and services to make money from your content. You can link to sales pages for other businesses and earn commissions. It’s called affiliate income and it’s a nice way to earn money. An affiliate is someone who promotes the products and services of others and earns commissions for their successful efforts.

Continuing with the example in #1, in that article about cleaning grout you might link to a good grout cleaning material or tool. When your readers click on that link and buy that material or tool, you earn a commission.

Look at products and services in your industry and see if they have affiliate programs. If they do, sign up, get your affiliate code (this is the code you’ll include in your links. It tracks your readers and ensures you get paid when they make a purchase), and insert affiliate links where it makes sense in your content.

#3 Pay Per Click

PPC or Pay Per Click programs are advertising programs. You sign up for the program, insert the code they give you in the body of your articles and blog posts and advertisements show up on the page. When visitors click on the ads, you earn money.

Finally, consider partnering with a site that complements your niche and send referrals to earn a percentage of the sales. Include links to their site in your call to action or in the body of your content and earn cash. Ultimately the key to monetizing content is to write or create great content. You can monetize written content as well as video content.

How to Improve Your Brand Visibility

Creating a strong brand takes time. It also takes a strategy and the ability to step back and assess how your tactics are working. If you’re struggling to improve your brand visibility, consider these tips and strategies.

Brand Visibility through Viral Marketing

Viral marketing gives you the ability to reach a large group of people very quickly. Videos commonly go viral. They’re easy to share and they’re easy to consume. It generally takes less than five minutes to watch a video and you can send them to friends from your phone. Written content and photos can become viral, too.

Consider your topic and how you might capitalize on the branding ability of viral content. Can you give away a free report that offers significant value to your audience? Can you create a compelling video that people will want to watch and share?

Building Brand Visibility via Partnerships with Other Visible Brands

Another way you can build your own brand visibility is to partner with other visible brands. For example, if you have a website about coffee makers, you might pursue a partnership with a coffee manufacturer. Now you can have a direct partnership, an affiliate partnership, or an implied partnership. A direct partnership is the fastest way to build brand visibility because you’re able to tap into your partner’s audience and build recognition quickly.

With an implied partnership you might focus on the keywords “Mr. Coffee coffee makers” and build your search engine ranking for those keywords. You could also become an affiliate and publish advertisements on your site for Mr. Coffee. The two efforts combined may improve your brand visibility amongst your target audience. You can also become active on the partner’s website by blogging, commenting, and participating in forums.

Brand Visibility and Content

Content is ultimately the beginning, middle, and end of any brand visibility campaign. Publish more content – publish it on more sites, blogs, and in more publications – and you’ll build visibility.

Social Networking

If you don’t have a social networking strategy and profile, consider building one. It’s a wonderful way to improve your visibility and you can use it to promote all of your business, marketing, and branding efforts.

Building Brand Visibility through Events

Finally, consider hosting or participating in notable events. For example, if you have a blog about coffee makers, consider giving away fifty coffee makers to families in need. Create a campaign to raise money to buy and give away those coffee makers. Events attract attention. Think about how you can make a difference, make some noise, and attract attention of your prospects and audience.

Twitter Do’s and Don’ts

Twitter is a useful tool for both personal and business needs. If you are new to Twitter, it may be helpful to learn how to use it to your best advantage. Here are a few do’s and don’ts to get you started.

Twitter was revolutionary when it started. It’s a platform that uses short messages to communicate with others. It could be up-to-the-minute information about you or communication with clients and co-workers on projects and the like. And, you can follow others just like on other social networks.

With Twitter, there are very few established rules. Most of the advice given on how to use Twitter is about etiquette and using the service to connect with other business professionals, clients and the like.

Do’s on Twitter

So, let’s take a look at some of the positive things to do on Twitter.

* Follow others – It is not just about you; it’s also about connecting with people. Get involved in what is going on in your area of expertise. Follow people with similar interests. This gives you a higher visibility and can help establish you in that niche on Twitter. If you see something interesting, retweet it so others can follow too.

* Tweet – It’s just like posting on Facebook. Leave meaningful information for others. You can talk about yourself, but not too much. Intermingle some useful content with your conversational pieces.

* Create a compelling biography – Use your bio to its utmost. You have just a few characters so use keywords that are searchable to describe yourself and help others to search for you and find you.

* Be professional – This includes using proper grammar in your tweets. Abbreviations don’t lend themselves to professionalism.

Don’ts on Twitter

* Don’t tweet every second – You often hear about people who tweet about eating dinner, going to the bathroom and every other thing they do all day. This is not what people want to hear from you. In fact, it is one way to lose your ranking and current audience. It just clogs up the works for those following you.

* Be careful what you say – Once you have entered something on the internet, it will be there forever. Inflammatory tweets reflect negatively on you and can come back to haunt you later.

* Don’t be too negative – People who are always looking on the downside crash the party. Misery loves company, but you will lose yours if you persist.

* Learn to use hashtags properly – Hashtags can help you and others to follow a conversation more easily. But, use them the right way. Don’t put a hashtag on each word in your tweet. And, don’t hashtag a run-on tweet.

Using Twitter doesn’t have to be complicated or hard. Be yourself and use the above advice to make the most of your time there.

How to Maintain Online Search Rankings

Once you’re ranked in the search engines, the game isn’t over. Ranking in the search engines isn’t a one-time endeavor. You need to keep working on your rankings to make sure that you can and do improve your traffic.

If you aren’t regularly working on improving your rankings, your competitors will be able to overtake you. By the time your competitors actually outstrip you in the rankings, they may already be way ahead of you in backlinks and other factors.

To prevent this from happening, you need to proactively maintain your search rankings. Here’s how.

==> Maintain a Steady Backlinking Strategy

Marketers often put huge pushes into getting backlinks when they want to achieve rankings, then completely neglect getting backlinks once the rankings are established.

Instead, once you’ve gotten your rankings, it pays to continue putting a small amount of energy into getting backlinks. You don’t need to get as many as when you’re striving for rankings, but you should still keep your link building efforts active.

For example, instead of shooting for 100 links a month, you might just shoot for 10. Enough to show Google that you’re still active, without tasking too many resources.

==> Keep Adding High Quality Content

Continue to add content to your website. It’s much, much easier for a static website to lose rankings than a website that’s constantly being updated.

When you add new content, you get new visitors. You get new pages to get ranked. You get more backlinks as more and more people find your site and link to it.

Also, Google wants to show people websites that are active. When given the choice between a three-year old website that hasn’t been updated and a website that’s constantly adding new content, Google will choose the latter, all else being equal.

==> Stay on Top of New Ranking Factors

The search engines are constantly updating their algorithms. By and large, it’s not hard to figure out what their latest updates are.

For example, in 2011 social media suddenly started playing a part in rankings. How often you’re tweeted about and your Facebook likes can now actually help your rankings.

Furthermore, Google and Bing came together to create Schema, which allows you to embed data structures into your website that helps search engines figure out what your content is about.

Stay on top of developments in the search world and make sure your website is taking advantage of all the new ranking factors.

These are a few smart ways to maintain your online search rankings. Remember: if you don’t actively maintain your rankings, sooner or later your rankings will drop. It’s much easier to proactively protect your rankings than it is to try and chase them back once they’re gone.
